Highlights

 U.S. stocks end lower on Wednesday, pulled down by a sizable loss in Apple shares following disappointing results. The Euro was moderately higher against the dollar and the yen during Asian trade Thursday, with the parliamentary passage of key economic steps in Greece prompting the common currency to be bought. Chinese stocks retreated slightly after four day of gains, as the Shanghai Composite Index nudged 0.1% lower, while in Hong Kong, the Hang Seng Index HSI, +0.53% dropped 0.9%, and the mainland-China-tracking Hang Seng China Enterprises Index HSCEI, +0.78% declined 1.5%.

 The US dollar is currently trading at 1.09 to the euro; 1.56 to the pound and will buy 124.01 Japanese Yen or 12.43 South African Rand.

 Spot gold is currently trading at US$ 1 097.60/oz. and platinum at US$ 986.20/oz. Brent crude oil is currently trading at US$ 56.04 per barrel.

International Markets

The S&P 500 closed 5 points, or 0.2%, lower at 2 114.14. The Nasdaq Composite dropped 36.35 points, or 0.7%, to 5 171.77. The Dow Jones Industrial Average ended the day down 68.25 points, or 0.4%, to 17 851.04.

Germany’s DAX fell 84.13 points to 11 521 and France’s CAC 40 lost 24 points to 5 083. The U.K.’s FTSE 100 shed 101.73 points to 6 667.

The Hang Seng Index was up 0.6% and the Shanghai Composite Index was up 1.3%.

Domestic markets

The All-share index was only 0.04% higher at 53 009 points after opening about 200 points higher, and the Top 40-index was unchanged at 47 388 points.

Commodities

Spot gold is currently trading at US$ 1 097.60/oz. and platinum at US$ 986.20/oz. Brent crude oil is currently trading at US$ 56.04 per barrel.
