International markets

The S&P 500 closed 9.30 points, or 0.5%, lower at 2 080.16, with eight of its 10 main sectors trading lower, but was still positive for the year, up 0.5% year-to-date. The Dow Jones Industrial Average which briefly turned negative after dropping more than 170 points at session lows, closed 86.22 points, or 0.5%, lower at 17 841.98. The Nasdaq Composite lost 19.68 points, or 0.4%, to 4 919.64.

The Stoxx Europe 600 opens at 2% lower at 390.22. Germany’s DAX 30 is higher at .20% to 11 350 and France’s CAC 40 is also higher at 0.15% to 4 982. The FTSE 100 gained 0.8% to 6 934.

The Hang Seng Index was up 0.8% and the Shanghai Composite Index was up 1.6%.

The US dollar is currently trading at 1.13 to the euro 1.52 to the pound and will buy 119.49 Japanese Yen or 12.05 South African Rand.

Domestic markets

The benchmark Top-10 index shed 1.25% to 47 707 and the broader All-Share index fell 1.33% to 53 848.

Commodities

Spot gold is currently trading at US$ 1 190.30/oz. and platinum at US$ 1 140.80/oz. Brent crude oil is currently trading at US$ 67.73 per barrel.
