Highlights

 U.S. stocks declined on Tuesday, retreating from all-time highs and the psychologically significant 5,000 level for the Nasdaq reached on Monday. European stocks fell Tuesday, stepping away from the record highs reached after better-than-expected German and Spanish data showed upbeat developments in both economies. Hong Kong stocks extended losses Wednesday morning, as the Hang Seng Index HSI, -0.25% fell 0.3%.

 Spot gold is currently trading at US$ 1 206.60/oz. and platinum at US$ 1 186.50/oz. Brent crude oil is currently trading at US$ 60.58 per barrel.

 The US dollar is currently trading at 1.12 to the euro, 1.54 to the pound and will buy 119.67 Japanese Yen or 11.76 South African Rand.

International markets

Hong Kong stocks extended losses Wednesday morning, as the Hang Seng Index HSI, -0.25% fell 0.3%.

The S&P 500 lost 9.61 points, or 0.5%, to close at 2 107.78. The Dow Jones Industrial Average which dropped as much as 146 points, closed 85.26 points, or 0.5%, lower at 18 203.37. The Nasdaq scored its first close above 5,000 since the Internet bust, finishing at 5,008.10.

The Stoxx Europe 600 fell 0.9% to 387.68. The Germany’s DAX 30 index lowered by 1.1% to 11 280.36. The France’s CAC 40 also turned lower, closing with a loss of 1% at 4 869.25.The U.K.’s FTSE 100 which closed 0.7% lower at 6 899.13.

The Hang Seng Index was down 0.3% and the Shanghai Composite Index was up 0.3%.

The US dollar is currently trading at 1.12 to the euro, 1.54 to the pound and will buy 119.67 Japanese Yen or 11.76 South African Rand.

Domestic markets

The All-share index was only 0.23% higher at 53 074.54, while the Top 40-index which includes most of the big double-listed shares was unchanged at 43 773.81.

Commodities

Spot gold is currently trading at US$ 1 206.60/oz. and platinum at US$ 1 186.50/oz. Brent crude oil is currently trading at US$ 60.58 per barrel.
