Highlights

 U.S. stocks recorded solid gains on Thursday, buoyed by a rebound in oil prices, deal news and upbeat quarterly earnings, pushing the S&P 500 and Dow industrials into positive territory for the year. Greece stocks sold off on Thursday after the European Central Bank restricted liquidity to Greek banks, while the broader European stock markets got a boost from the rally in oil prices. Hong Kong stocks reversed opening gains and headed down on Friday morning.

 Spot gold is currently trading at US$ 1 267.10/oz. and platinum at US$ 1 256.30/oz. Brent crude oil is currently trading at US$ 57.85 per barrel.

 The US dollar is currently trading at 1.14 to the euro, 1.53 to the pound and will buy 117.29 Japanese Yen or 11.29 South African Rand.

International markets

Greece stocks sold off on Thursday after the European Central Bank restricted liquidity to Greek banks, while the broader European stock markets got a boost from the rally in oil prices. Hong Kong stocks reversed opening gains and headed down on Friday morning.

The S&P 500 closed 21 points, or 1%, higher at 2 062.50. The Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped 212 points, or 1.2%, to 17 885. The Nasdaq Composite ended the day up 48 points, or 1%, at 4 765.

The Stoxx Europe 600 index ended 0.1% higher at 372.51 for a fourth straight positive close. The France’s CAC 40 index gained 0.2% to 4,703.30, while the U.K.’s FTSE 100 index added 0.1% to 6 865.93. Germany’s DAX 30 index dropped 0.1% to 10 905.41.

The Hang Seng Index was down 0.1% and the Shanghai Composite was down 1.1%.

The US dollar is currently trading at 1.14 to the euro, 1.53 to the pound and will buy 117.29 Japanese Yen or 11.29 South African Rand.

Domestic markets

The JSE Top-40 index barely moved,adding 0.09% to 45 450. The broader All-share index was up 0.11%at 51 688.

Commodities

Spot gold is currently trading at US$ 1 267.10/oz. and platinum at US$ 1 256.30/oz. Brent crude oil is currently trading at US$ 57.85 per barrel.
