Highlights

 U.S. stock and bond markets are closed on Monday for the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, Europe’s broad equity-market benchmark closed higher Monday, hitting a seven-year high as investors weigh up the prospects for quantitative easing from the European Central Bank. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index bounced back 0.4%, with the Hang Seng China Enteprises up 1.6%. Statistics released 30 minutes into the trading day showed China’s gross domestic product rose 7.3% in the October- December period.

 Spot gold is currently trading at US$ 1 277.50/oz. and platinum at US$ 1 262.60/oz. Brent crude oil is currently trading at US$ 48.65 per barrel.

 The US dollar is currently trading at 1.16 to the euro, 1.51 to the pound and will buy 118.29 Japanese Yen or 11.67 South African Rand.

International markets

S&P 500 remains up 26.75 points, or 1.3%, at 2 019 The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 190.86 points, or 1.1%, to 17 512.The Nasdaq Composite remains at 63.56 points, or 1.4%, at 4 634.38.

The Stoxx Europe 600 closed 2.6% higher at 348.45. The Germany’s DAX 30 rose 0.7% to 10 242.35, the France’s CAC 40 gained 0.4% to 4 394.93, and the U.K.’s FTSE 100 tacked on 0.5% to 6 585.53.

The Hang Seng Index was up 0.4% and the Shanghai Composite Index was up 0.5%

The US dollar is currently trading at 1.16 to the euro, 1.51 to the pound and will buy 118.29 Japanese Yen or 11.67 South African Rand.

Domestic markets

The All-share index was 0.54% higher at 48 718 while the Top 40-index gained 0.61% to 42 715.

Commodities

Spot gold is currently trading at US$ 1 277.50/oz. and platinum at US$ 1 262.60/oz. Brent crude oil is currently trading at US$ 48.65 per barrel.
