Highlights

International markets

U.S. stocks had big gains in energy, materials and industrials sectors, following a rebound in oil and gold prices, helped propel the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average to record levels on Wednesday. European stock markets rose for a second straight day on Wednesday, with investors piling into the region’s equities on hopes the European Central Bank will enact more easing measures. Hong Kong shares rose in tandem early Thursday, with gains for the financial sector leading the market higher.

The S&P 500 gained 7.77 points, or 0.4%, to 2 074.32. The Dow Jones Industrial Average index added 33.07 points, or 0.2%, to 17 912.62. The Nasdaq Composite ended the day 18.66 points, or 0.4%, higher at 4 774.47.

The Stoxx Europe 600 index ended up 0.6% at 349.34, marking its highest level since early June. Germany’s DAX 30 index rose 0.4% to 9 971.79, and France’s CAC 40 index ended up 0.1% at 4 391.45. The U.K.’s FTSE 100 index fell 0.4% to 6 716.63.

The Hang Seng Index is up 0.9% and the Shanghai Composite Index is up 2.8%.

The US dollar is currently trading at 1.23 to the euro, 1.57 to the pound and will buy 119.89   Japanese Yen or 11.23 South African Rand.

Domestic markets

The All-share index was 0.26% stronger at 49 772 points. The Top 40 index gained 0.36% to 44 134 points.

Commodities

Spot gold is currently trading at US$ 1 205.60/oz. and platinum at US$ 1 227.00/oz. Brent crude oil is currently trading at US$ 70.30 per barrel.
