Highlights

 American stocks closed higher. European stocks and bonds rose Monday, still encouraged by hints of further stimulus from the ECB last week, even though strong German business sentiment data may diminish expectations for immediate action. Hong Kong stocks swung between small gains and losses Tuesday morning after a rally the previous day.

 Spot gold is currently trading at US$1 195.50/oz. and platinum at US$ 1 209.80/oz. Brent crude oil is currently trading at US$ 79.59 per barrel.

 The US dollar is currently trading at 1.24 to the euro, 1.56 to the pound and will buy 117.93 Japanese Yen and 11.03 South African Rand.

International markets

American stocks closed higher. European stocks and bonds rose Monday, still encouraged by hints of further stimulus from the ECB last week, even though strong German business sentiment data may diminish expectations for immediate action. Hong Kong stocks swung between small gains and losses Tuesday morning after a rally the previous day.

The S&P 500 closed 5.91 points, or 0.3%, higher at 2 069.41, the 46th time it closed at record level this year. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dipped in an out of negative territory but closed marginally higher, adding 7.87 points to 17 817. The blue-chip index hit a record high for the 29th time this year. The Nasdaq Composite ended the day up 41.92 points, or 0.9%, at 4 754.89, thanks to a rally in biotechnology sector stocks.

The Stoxx Europe 600 closed 0.1% higher. The FTSE 100 Index closed 0.3% lower at 6 729.79. The DAX gained 0.54% to 9 785.54. The CAC 40 Index gained 0.49% to 4 368.44.

The Hang Seng Index was little changed. Over on the Chinese mainland, the Shanghai Composite Index rose 0.6%.

The US dollar is currently trading at 1.24 to the euro, 1.56 to the pound and will buy 117.93 Japanese Yen and 11.03 South African Rand.

Domestic markets

The JSE Top-40 index lost 0.37% to 45 082 and the broader All-share index gained 0.25% to 50 727.

Commodities
