Highlights

  • The U.S. stock market finished Thursday’s mostly subdued trading session slightly higher. European stocks closed mostly lower Thursday, pushed down following a fresh round of discouraging economic data for the struggling region. Hong Kong stocks struggled to stay above the water on Friday after four straight days of losses.
  • Spot gold is currently trading at US$ 1 190.70/oz. and platinum at US$ 1 211.60/oz. Brent crude oil is currently trading at US$ 79.65 per barrel.

International markets

The U.S. stock market finished Thursday’s mostly subdued trading session slightly higher. European stocks closed mostly lower Thursday, pushed down following a fresh round of discouraging economic data for the struggling region. Hong Kong stocks struggled to stay above the water on Friday after four straight days of losses.

The S&P 500 closed 4 points, or 0.2%, higher at 2 052.75, the 44th record close this year. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 33.27 points, or 0.2%, to 17 719.00, logging its 27th record close in 2014. The Nasdaq Composite ended the day up 26.16 points, or 0.6%, at  4 701.87

The Stoxx Europe 600 finished down 0.3% and the DAX equity index rose 0.2% to 9 472.80. France’s CAC 40 index rose 0.1% to 4 266.19 and the pressure on miners also hit the U.K.’s FTSE 100 index which fell 0.3% to 6 495.70.

The Hang Seng Index is up 0.1% and the Shanghai Composite Index is up 0.5%

The US dollar is currently trading at 1.25 to the euro, 1.56 to the pound and will buy 117.95 Japanese Yen or 10.95 South African Rand.

Domestic markets

The benchmark Top-40 index dropped 1.9% to 43 676. The broader All-Share fell 1.8% 49 272.

Commodities

Spot gold is currently trading at US$ 1 190.70/oz. and platinum at US$ 1 211.60/oz. Brent crude oil is currently trading at US$ 79.65 per barrel.
