Highlights

  • The U.S. stock market rocked back and forth in the wake of the latest minutes from the last month’s meeting of the Federal Open Market Committee, but closed marginally lower on Wednesday. Mining stocks suffered in European trading Wednesday, limiting gains on the pan-European index after a two-session run of advances. Hong Kong stocks dropped further Wednesday morning, heading for a third straight day of declines.
  • Spot gold is currently trading at US$ 1 193.60/oz. and platinum at US$ 1 187.80/oz. Brent crude oil is currently trading at US$ 77.97 per barrel.
  • The US dollar is currently trading at 1.25 to the euro, 1.56 to the pound and will buy 118.61 Japanese Yen or 11.07 South African Rand.

International markets

The U.S. stock market rocked back and forth in the wake of the latest minutes from the last month’s meeting of the Federal Open Market Committee, but closed marginally lower on Wednesday. Mining stocks suffered in European trading Wednesday, limiting gains on the pan-European index after a two-session run of advances. Hong Kong stocks dropped further Wednesday morning, heading for a third straight day of declines.

The S&P 500 closed 3.1 points lower at 2 048.72. The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 2.1 points to 17 685.73. The Nasdaq Composite finished down 26.73 points, or 0.6%, at 4 675.71

The Stoxx Europe 600 finished less than 1 point lower, at 339 and the DAX equity index rose 0.2% to 9 472.80. France’s CAC 40 index rose 0.1% to 4 266.19 and the U.K.’s FTSE 100 rose 0.3% to 6 654.37. The pressure on miners also hit the U.K.’s FTSE 100 index which fell 0.2% to 6 696.60.

The Hang Seng Index was down 0.7% and the Shanghai Composite Index was down 0.2%

The US dollar is currently trading at 1.25 to the euro, 1.56 to the pound and will buy 118.61 Japanese Yen or 11.07 South African Rand.

Domestic markets

The benchmark Top-40 index fell by 0.62% to 44 532. The broader All-Share index was down 0.44% to 50 150.

Commodities

Spot gold is currently trading at US$ 1 193.60/oz. and platinum at US$ 1 187.80/oz. Brent crude oil is currently trading at US$ 77.97 per barrel.
