Highlights

  • U.S stocks ended Thursday’s mixed trading activity slightly higher, but a continued sell-off in energy stocks, due to falling oil prices, weighed on the S&P 500. European stocks finished Thursday’s session with strong gains, though oil and gas shares came under pressure as oil prices extended losses to multiyear lows. Hong Kong stocks swung between small gains and losses Friday morning following a four-day winning streak.

International markets

U.S stocks ended Thursday’s mixed trading activity slightly higher, but a continued sell-off in energy stocks, due to falling oil prices, weighed on the S&P 500. European stocks finished Thursday’s session with strong gains, though oil and gas shares came under pressure as oil prices extended losses to multiyear lows. Hong Kong stocks swung between small gains and losses Friday morning following a four-day winning streak.

The S&P 500 eked out a 1-point gain to close at 2 039.33, as energy sector stocks weighed on the index. The Nasdaq Composite finished the day 5 points, or 0.1%, higher at 4 680.14. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gyrated between gains and losses, but ended the session at a fresh record high at 17 654.79.

The Stoxx Europe 600 index SXXP, +0.23%  closed up 0.2% to 335.86, France’s CAC 40 index rose 0.2% to 4 187.95, and Germany’s DAX 30 index gained 0.4% to 9 248.51. The U.K.’s FTSE 100 rose 0.4% to 6 335.45.

The Hang Seng Index was up 0.1% and the Shanghai Composite Index was down 0.6%

The US dollar is currently trading at 1.24 to the euro, 1.56 to the pound and will buy 116.22    Japanese Yen or 11.23 South African Rand.

Domestic markets

The benchmark Top-40 index climbed 0.41% to 45 121 while the wider All-Share index added 0.42% to 50 588.

Commodities

Spot gold is currently trading at US$ 1 155.20/oz. and platinum at US$ 1 190.20/oz. Brent crude oil is currently trading at US$ 77.26 per barrel.
