Highlights

  • U.S stocks closed at record highs, the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed to record levels for the second straight day Thursday. European stock markets swiftly erased earlier losses and moved higher in afternoon action Thursday.  Despite gains for most of the major East Asia stock indexes Friday morning, Hong Kong stocks went the other way.
  • Spot gold is currently trading at US$ 1 133.30/oz. and platinum at US$ 1 189.10/oz. Brent crude oil is currently trading at US$ 82.28 per barrel.
  • The US dollar is currently trading at 1.24 to the euro, 1.58 to the pound and will buy 115.33    Japanese Yen or 11.26 South African Rand.

International markets

U.S stocks closed at record highs, the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed to record levels for the second straight day Thursday. European stock markets swiftly erased earlier losses and moved higher in afternoon action Thursday.  Despite gains for most of the major East Asia stock indexes Friday morning, Hong Kong stocks went the other way.

The S&P 500 added 7.64 points, or 0.4%, to 2 031.21, with energy and industrial sectors leading the gains. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 69.94 points, or 0.4%, to 17 544.47. The Nasdaq Composite closed 17.75 points, or 0.4%, higher at 4 638.47.

The Stoxx Europe 600 index rose 0.2% to close at 337.08, after trading as low as 334.36. France’s CAC 40 index jumped 0.5% to 4 227.68, while Germany’s DAX 30 index climbed 0.7% to 9 377.41. The U.K.’s FTSE 100 index gained 0.2% to 6 551.15.

The Hang Seng Index was up 0.7% and the Shanghai Composite Index was up 1.1%

The US dollar is currently trading at 1.24 to the euro, 1.58 to the pound and will buy 115.33    Japanese Yen or 11.26 South African Rand.

Domestic markets

The All-share index was 0.24% lower at 49 598 points, while the Top 40 index lost 0.16% to 44 326 points.

Commodities

Spot gold is currently trading at US$ 1 133.30/oz. and platinum at US$ 1 189.10/oz. Brent crude oil is currently trading at US$ 82.28 per barrel.
