Highlights

  • U.S stocks closed at record highs, as upbeat report on the labour market as well as midterm election results that left Republicans with a Senate majority boosted prices. European stock markets bounced back sharply on Wednesday, helped by a round of upbeat earnings results. Hong Kong stocks enjoyed some slim gains in early Thursday trading, with the Hang Seng Index up 0.1%, rubbing out a little of its 0.6% loss in the previous session.
  • Spot gold is currently trading at US$ 1 143.10/oz. and platinum at US$ 1 210.40/oz. Brent crude oil is currently trading at US$ 83.10 per barrel.
  • The US dollar is currently trading at 1.25 to the euro, 1.60 to the pound and will buy 114.27 Japanese Yen or 11.14 South African Rand.

International markets

U.S stocks closed at record highs, as upbeat report on the labour market as well as midterm election results that left Republicans with a Senate majority boosted prices. European stock markets bounced back sharply on Wednesday, helped by a round of upbeat earnings results. Hong Kong stocks enjoyed some slim gains in early Thursday trading, with the Hang Seng Index up 0.1%, rubbing out a little of its 0.6% loss in the previous session.

The S&P 500 rose 11.43 points, or 0.6%, to 2 023.53. The Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped 100.69 points, or 0.6%, to 17 484.53. The Nasdaq Composite lagged the main benchmarks and closed down 2.91 points or 0.1%, at 4 620.72.

The Stoxx Europe 600 index rallied 1.7% to close at 336.36, after sliding 1% on Tuesday. France’s CAC 40 index picked up 1.9% to 4 208.42, while Germany’s DAX 30 index climbed 1.6% to 9 315.48. The U.K.’s FTSE 100 index rose 1.3% to 6 539.14.

The Hang Seng Index was down 0.2% and the Shanghai Composite Index was down 0.5%

The US dollar is currently trading at 1.25 to the euro, 1.60 to the pound and will buy 114.27    Japanese Yen or 11.14 South African Rand.

Domestic markets

The benchmark Top-40 index slid 0.13% to 44 395. The wider All-share index tumbled 0.14% to 49 717.

Commodities
