Highlights

  • U.S. stock-index futures suggested losses at the Tuesday open, with the weakness coinciding with a pullback in much of Asia. European stock markets fell on Monday, as last Friday’s huge rally, so far, has failed to carry over into this week’s start. Hong Kong stocks held their ground early Tuesday ahead of a slate of Chinese economic data due out later in the morning, including third-quarter economic growth.
  • Spot gold is currently trading at US$ 1 244.00/oz. and platinum at US$ 1 272.90/oz.
  • Brent crude oil is currently trading at US$ 85.62 per barrel.
  • The US dollar is currently trading at 1.28 to the euro, 1.62 to the pound and will buy 106.37 Japanese Yen or 10.98 South African Rand.

International markets 

U.S. stock-index futures suggested losses at the Tuesday open, with the weakness coinciding with a pullback in much of Asia. European stock markets fell on Monday, as last Friday’s huge rally, so far, has failed to carry over into this week’s start. Hong Kong stocks held their ground early Tuesday ahead of a slate of Chinese economic data due out later in the morning, including third-quarter economic growth.

The S&P 500 gained 17.25 points, or 0.9% to 1 904.01. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed 19.26 points, or 0.1%, higher at 16 399.67 The Nasdaq Composite rose 57.64 points, or 1.4%, to 4 316.07

The Stoxx Europe 600 index lost 0.5% to end at 317.01, after ringing up a 2.8% rally on Friday. On Monday, the DAX 30 index suffered another beating, closing down 1.5% at            8 717.76. The France’s CAC 40 fell 1% to 3 991.24, while the U.K.’s FTSE 100 index dropped 0.7% to 6 267.02.

The Hang Seng Index was down. The Shanghai Composite Index was down 0.3%.

The US dollar is currently trading at 1.28 to the euro, 1.62 to the pound and will buy 106.37 Japanese Yen or 10.98 South African Rand.

Domestic markets

The Top-40 index was down 0.6% to 42 479 while the All-share index lost 0.5% to 47 599

Commodities

Spot gold is currently trading at US$ 1 244.00/oz. and platinum at US$ 1 272.90/oz.         Brent crude oil is currently trading at US$ 85.62 per barrel.
