Highlights

  • U.S. stock investors scrambled for the exits on Thursday, sending the Dow Jones Industrial Average down 335 points, its worst one-day point plunge in more than a year. Initial excitement over dovish Federal Reserve minutes faded in Europe on Thursday, as lingering concerns over Germany’s economic firepower pushed most stocks lower. Hong Kong stocks dropped sharply Friday morning, following a heavy-off on Wall Street overnight.

International markets

U.S. stock investors scrambled for the exits on Thursday, sending the Dow Jones Industrial Average down 335 points, its worst one-day point plunge in more than a year. Initial excitement over dovish Federal Reserve minutes faded in Europe on Thursday, as lingering concerns over Germany’s economic firepower pushed most stocks lower. Hong Kong stocks dropped sharply Friday morning, following a heavy-off on Wall Street overnight.

The S&P 500 fell 40.68 points, or 2.1%, to 1 928.21, its biggest one-day percentage drop since April 10. The Dow Jones Industrial slid 334.97 points, or 2%, to 16 659.25, marking its fourth drop of more than 300 points this year. The Nasdaq Composite fell 90.26 points, or 2.2%, to 4 378.34.

The Stoxx Europe 600 index added to its 0.9% slump from Wednesday and fell 0.4% to end at 326.67, for the lowest close since August. France’s CAC 40 index lost 0.6% to 4 141.45, while Germany’s DAX 30 inched 0.1% higher to 9 005.02 .The U.K.’s FTSE 100 index dropped 0.8% to 6 431.85.

The Hang Seng Index was down 1.6%; the Shanghai Composite Index was down 0.6%

The US dollar is currently trading at 1.27 to the euro, 1.61 to the pound and will buy 10.74 Japanese Yen or 11.06 South African Rand. 

Domestic markets

By midday on Thursday the All-share index was 1.52% higher at 48 764 points, while the Top 40 index improved by 1.55% to 43 509.

Commodities
