Highlights

  • The U.S. stock market swung wildly between gains and losses on Thursday but finished the session virtually unchanged. Hong Kong stocks rebounded Thursday morning after a previous loss.
  • Spot gold is currently trading at US$ 1 225.20/oz. and platinum at US$ 1281.00/oz.           Brent crude oil is currently trading at US$ 91.62 per barrel.
  • The US dollar is currently trading at 1.27 to the euro, 1.62 to the pound and will buy 107.81 Japanese Yen or 11.06 South African Rand.

International markets

The U.S. stock market swung wildly between gains and losses on Thursday but finished the session virtually unchanged. Hong Kong stocks rebounded Thursday morning after a previous loss.

The S&P 500 closed a fraction higher at 1 946.17. The Dow Jones Industrial Average ended down 3.66 points at 16 801.05. The Nasdaq Composite picked up 8.11 points to 4 430.19.

The Hang Seng Index was up 1%; The Shanghai Composite Index was up 0.1% 

The US dollar is currently trading at 1.27 to the euro, 1.62 to the pound and will buy 107.81 Japanese Yen or 11.06 South African Rand. 

Domestic markets

The JSE Top-40 index, which has retreated about 9% since July, lost 1.5% to 42 846 and the broader All-Share index gave up 1.4% to 48 033.

Commodities

Spot gold is currently trading at US$ 1 225.20/oz. and platinum at US$ 1281.00/oz.           Brent crude oil is currently trading at US$ 91.62 per barrel.
