Highlights

 Spot gold is currently trading at US$ 1 291.60/oz. and platinum at US$ 1 460.00/oz. Brent crude oil is currently trading at US$ 104.80 per barrel.

 The US dollar is currently trading at 1.33 to the euro, 1.68 to the pound and will buy 102.55 Japanese Yen or 10.78 South African Rand.

 U.S. stocks closed sharply lower on Tuesday following reports that Russia is building up its military presence on the border with Ukraine. European stocks moved higher on Tuesday, as shares of Vivendi SA lit up over a bid for a Brazilian company in which it has a stake. Taking a negative lead from the U.S., Hong Kong stocks retreated in early trading Wednesday.

International markets

Taking a negative lead from the U.S., Hong Kong stocks retreated in early trading Wednesday.

The S&P 500 closed 18.78 points, or 1%, lower at 1 920.21. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 139.81 points, or 0.8%, to 16 429.47. The Nasdaq Composite fell 31.05 points, or 0.7%, to 4 352.84.

The Stoxx 600 finished up 0.3% at 332.10, its first win in five sessions. Germany’s DAX 30 gained 0.4% to 9 189.74. The FTSE 100 Index gained 0.07% to 6 682.48 and the CAC 40 Index was up 0.37% to 4 232.88.

The Hang Seng Index moved down 0.8%. Over on the Chinese mainland, the Shanghai Composite Index was off 0.8%.

Domestic markets

The blue-chip JSE Top-40 index rose 0.24% to 46 110 points and the broader All-share index was up 0.21% at 51 349.
