Highlights

 U.S. stocks closed lower on Monday as investors remained jittery amid escalating war in Gaza and possible tougher sanctions against Russia. The death toll inside Gaza mounted over the weekend as Israel stepped up its ground war, while European policy makers debated tougher sanctions against Russia in the wake of the downing of a Malaysia Airlines passenger jet. Russian stocks slid nearly 3% on Monday, as the country faced the possibility of further sanctions related to the conflict with Ukraine. Hong Kong stocks rebounded Tuesday morning after three straight days of losses.

 Spot gold is currently trading at US$ 1 313.70/oz. and platinum at US$ 1 486.10/oz. Brent crude oil is currently trading at US$ 104.90 per barrel.

 The US dollar is currently trading at 1.35 to the euro, 1.70 to the pound and will buy 101.53 Japanese Yen or 10.60 South African Rand.

International markets

Hong Kong stocks rebounded Tuesday morning after three straight days of losses.

The S&P 500 closed 4.6 points, or 0.2%, lower at 1 973.63, with 9 of 10 sectors in the red. The Dow Jones Industrial Average shed 48.45 points, or 0.3%, to 17 051.73. The Nasdaq Composite slipped by 7.44 points, or 0.2% at 4 424.70.

The pan-European Stoxx Europe 600 index fell 0.5% to 337.95. The U.K.’s FTSE 100 index pulled back 0.3% to 6 728.44. German stocks also declined, with the DAX 30 index falling 1.1% to 9 612.05. In Paris, the CAC 40 index lost 0.7% to 4 304.74

The Hang Seng Index rising 0.5%, while on the Chinese mainland, the Shanghai Composite Index ticked up 0.1%.

The US dollar is currently trading at 1.35 to the euro, 1.70 to the pound and will buy 101.53 Japanese Yen or 10.60 South African Rand.

Domestic markets

The JSE All-share index closed 0.53% lower at 51 420 and the blue-chip Top 40 index fell 0.6% to 46 279.

Commodities
