Highlights

International Markets

European stock markets ended sharply lower on Thursday after the Ukraine-Russia conflict intensified, with a passenger jet reportedly downed over Ukrainian airspace. Asian stocks fall as global sell-off spreads.

The S&P 500 closed down 23.45 points, or 1.2%, to 1,958.12, its biggest one-day drop since April 10. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 161.39 points, or 0.9%, to 16,976.81, its biggest one-day point decline since May 15. Airline stocks took a big hit after the jet crash news. The Nasdaq Composite ended the day down 62.52 points, or 1.4%, at 4,363.45.

The Stoxx Europe 600 index slid 0.9% to close at 339.74, after posting the biggest one-day percentage gain since April on Wednesday. Germany’s DAX 30 index fell 1.1% to 9,753.88, while France’s CAC 40 index lost 1.2% to 4,316.12. The U.K.’s FTSE 100 index dropped 0.7% to 6,738.32.

Hang Seng Index falling 0.9%, marking the biggest decline in more than a week, the Shanghai Composite Index escaped the brunt of the regional weakness, edging down just 0.2
