U.S. stocks ended June and the second quarter higher, even as the broader market closed marginally lower on Monday. European stocks edged lower Monday, with shares of budget airline EasyJet PLC moving into the red, but the end of the second quarter marked a gain for the region’s key equity index. Asian stocks swing higher after early weakness

The S&P 500 recorded the fifth consecutive month of gains and the biggest second-quarter gain since 2009. The benchmark index closed less than a point lower at 1,960.19, gaining 3.9% over the month and 5% over the quarter. The Dow Jones Industrial Average shed 25.24 points, or 0.2%, to 16,825.96, but gained 1.9% over the past month and 2.2% over the past quarter. The Nasdaq Composite defied the trend and ended the day 10.25 points, or 0.2%, higher at 4,408.18

Stoxx Europe 600 finished up by 2.3%,its fourth straight quarter of gains. France’s CAC 40 equity index reversed course and fell 0.3% to 4,422.84. U.K.’s FTSE 100, which lost 0.2% to 6,743.94. In Frankfurt, the DAX 30 held to higher ground, ending up 0.2% at 9,833.07.

The FTSE and the DAX rose 2.2% and 2.9% for the second quarter, while the CAC rose 0.7%.
